I really enjoyed Soulless, so I was excited to keep listening to the series. ![]() This isn't super surprising (book one read like a bit of a TV pilot, although an excellent one), but the end of this just left me shrugging. It didn't spring from any organic conflict in the story or between the characters, it was clearly just shoehorned in as a (inexpert) romcom plot device to divide the leads before book 3. The twist is a huge cliche and Maccon's reaction to it is totally uncharacteristic. But really, for steampunk Victorian romance, still enjoyed it. The supporting characters are one or two note: Felicity (bad), Ivy (dumb, dumb hats), and Madame Lefoux (gay inventor). I like Alexia, I like Maccon, and there's some good banter along the way. There's not much meat on these bones, and I didn't feel terribly invested in the outcome of the mystery. I loved Soulless (good female characters! werewolf sex! prudish Victorian descriptions of werewolf sex!) and this was a step down. ![]()
